Practical tip: Design for manufacturing with spring-loaded pins
Cordless landline telephone or needle bed adapters are typical applications for spring-loaded pins, known as Pogo Pins. These come in a wide range of shapes and designs which makes them an excellent choice when a quick and reliable electrical connection is required that can also be easily released.
The advantages of spring-loaded pins is their ability to compensate for unevenness of the opposing contact surfaces and vibrations, and achieve at least 10,000 mating cycles.
Our blog on Pogo Pins explains what designers should consider when designing PCBs that use spring-loaded contacts and connectors. This is to ensure that the PCBs are suitable for assembly as what appears to be a good choice during the design phase may cause issues and additional costs during the assembly.
