University Racing Eindhoven Revolutionizes Electric Racing

University Racing Eindhoven (URE) is a student team from Eindhoven University of Technology, founded in 2003. Comprised of around 70 passionate students, including 8 full-time and 62 part-time members, we participate in the Formula Student competition. Formula Student is the world’s largest student engineering design challenge. Our mission is to educate the engineers of tomorrow and to design, build, and race fully electric and autonomous vehicles.

The URE18: A Leap Forward

The focus for URE18 was to initiate testing earlier in the season and to emphasize thorough validation. On April 18th, we achieved a significant milestone by driving our first meters, which is nearly two months ahead of previous URE cars.

This year, we resolved key issues with our powertrain, allowing us to reliably reach a top speed of 106 km/h. We also introduced an improved aerodynamic package and an integrated Emergency Brake System (EBS). We also conducted extensive lay-up testing, which allowed us to significantly reduce the weight of our monocoque. Moreover, we’ve developed a new Battery Management System and a DC/DC converter.

Thanks to the support from Eurocircuits, we were able to test multiple printed circuit boards (PCBs) quickly before final production. The rapid prototyping capabilities of Eurocircuits meant that PCBs could be delivered within just a few days, allowing us to quickly validate and optimize all functionalities.

The Competition Season

With URE18’s convertible concept, we competed in both electric and driverless categories this year. We participated in two major Formula Student competitions: Formula Student Netherlands (FSN) and Formula Student Germany (FSG). While the results were not as we had hoped as mechanical issues prevented us from completing the endurance event at FSN, and technical difficulties arose during FSG, the lap times we achieved were competitive with the top teams, demonstrating our car’s strong potential and performance.
